Charles Makey III

Charles Makey, III, is the president and chief executive officer of Merchants Insurance Group, headquartered in Buffalo, NY. Makey began his 27-year career with Merchants in 1996 as the director of sales. He was promoted in 1998 to assistant vice president/regional manager of the company’s New England regional office in Manchester, New Hampshire. In 2004, he assumed the role of vice president and regional manager of the company’s Central States Strategic Business Center in Dublin, Ohio. In 2009, Makey was promoted to the senior vice president of insurance operations in the corporate headquarters. In 2021, he was designated president of Merchants and in 2024 was promoted to president and chief executive officer. Makey is the immediate past chair of the New York Insurance Association Board of Directors, sits on the board of trustees for the New York Insurance Scholarship Foundation, is a board director of the Long Island Insurance Education Foundation; he volunteers in his community and is the treasurer on the Birdsong Community Association board. He also serves as a board member of Invest Buffalo and Aon’s Client Advisory Council.

Makey has a Master of Business Administration from Daniel Webster College, and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from St. Bonaventure University. He also holds the following designations from the Insurance Institute of America: associate in insurance services (AIS), associate in management (AIM), and INS (General Insurance).

A native of Buffalo, Mr. Makey and his family reside in Orchard Park, New York.
